Samsung’s 8K QN900D becomes the first TV to support 4K at 240Hz

4K 240Hz TVs have arrived, and Samsung is leading the charge

Samsung’s new QN900D 8K QLED TV is the first to support 4K at 240Hz. While no console supports this resolution/refresh rate combination, it is a feature that is prized by PC gamers, especially those with high-end systems.

While the QN900D is an 8K screen, it only supports this high resolution at up to 60Hz. If you move down to 4K, 240Hz mode becomes available to users. It needs Display Stream Compression (DSC) to run at 4K 240Hz. Thankfully, this feature is supported by current-generation PC graphics cards.

Samsung’s QN900D is the company’s first TV to use its NQ8 AI Gen3 processor, which is likely why it is the only 2024 Samsung TV to support 4K at 240Hz. This may mean that 4K 240Hz support may become more common on their 2025 TV lineup, potentially making 4K at 240Hz possible on next-generation OLED TVs.

Despite a lack of native 8K content and an apparent lack of interest in the resolution, Samsung is still building new 8K TVs every year. At this point, 8K isn’t even close to becoming a mainstream TV standard. However, Samsung justifies this ultra-high resolution with AI upscaling and large screen sizes. With AI upscaling, Samsung claims higher levels of image quality than 4K and claims to deliver near-native levels of 8K quality using native 4K content.

In their review of this TV, RTINGS confirmed that this screen’s 240Hz mode works as intended. The screen is available in 65-inch, 75-inch, and 85-inch sizes. These screens have price tags of £3999, £5099, and £7999, respectively. That’s an eye-watering price. However, that kind of pricing is to be expected from a cutting-edge 8K TV.
