iOS 18.3 brings Starlink connectivity to iPhone in the US

Apple has teamed up with SpaceX and T-Mobile to bring Starlink support to iPhone

Through the release of iOS 18.3, iPhone users in the US can now access the Starlink beta on compatible devices through T-Mobile. This allows iPhone users to utilise Starlink satellites for connectivity, giving them an alternative to Globalstar for off-grid communications.

The key benefit of Starlink support is the ability to send emergency messages outside of the range of standard cellular networks. Currently, Starlink support only gives users limited connectivity options, enabling texting through satellites. However, Elon Musk has stated that it is capable of “Medium resolution images, music & audio podcasts.” He also stated that Starlink’s “next generation constellation will do medium resolution video.”

Starlink support is currently only available in beta form through T-Mobile. In time, the service will improve and become available to more users. The full release will support more iPhone variants, supporting a majority of iPhones.

This update points towards a future where satellite networking will become more commonly used. It also points towards a future where mainstream phones can connect to satellites and use them for non-emergency communications. That could be a game-changer for networking in isolated places and even allow satellite networks to replace cellular networks in remote areas.
