Reddit confirms plan to add a paywall for exclusive content this year
Paid-for subreddits are coming to Reddit later this year with the introduction of paywall options
As part of a new AMA, Reddit’s CEO (Steve Huffman) has confirmed a new “work in progress” feature that is certain to annoy most of the platform’s user base. Paywall content is coming to Reddit as one of the platform’s “new key features.”
With the addition of a paywall, exclusive content can be placed in a private/hidden area of Reddit. Only paid users will be able to access this content, creating a revenue stream for Reddit and creators on the platform.
The good news is that paid-for content will only be available for new subreddit types. That means that existing subreddits will not suddenly be paywalled. However, the creation of paid-for subreddits creates new problems for Reddit and raises questions that need to be answered. Will Moderators be paid for their work on paid-for subreddits? How will Reddit police the content inside these private groups?
Expect further monetisation efforts on Reddit
In time, Reddit wants to become the Western equivalent of Weibo, the Chinese social media platform. It wants to integrate a payment system within its platform, allowing it to avoid third parties like Paypal. Reddit also wants to monetise the platform further. After all, Reddit is now a publicly traded company, and that means that “shareholder value” is everything.
Recent moneymaking efforts from Reddit include sharing (selling) data with AI companies to help train AI models. In 2023, they also changed how API access worked for the platform, forcing app developers to pay millions to continue using them. These efforts have frustrated many Reddit users, forcing many popular subreddits to “go dark” in protest. Reddit now has a delicate balancing act to play. They need to generate revenue for shareholders, but they also need to maintain their user base.
