AMD blames AM5 CPU/socket burnouts on motherboard makers

AMD blames motherboard makers and BIOS non-compliance for CPU/socket burnout issues

In an interview with Quazar Zone, AMD representatives commented on CPU/motherboard socket burnouts that happened earlier this year. When asked about this issue, AMD stated that “this issue arises because some ODM BIOSes do not adhere to AMD’s recommended values.” This pins the blame for this issue on motherboard manufacturers, who create issues by failing to comply with AMD’s standards.

AMD’s reps recommended that all PC builders update their motherboard BIOS files to their latest versions. These changes incorporate “additional features, performance improvements, and troubleshooting solutions.” This ensures that AMD users have the best possible experience.

Quazer Zone Question – Since the beginning of this year, some AM5 CPUs have been experiencing socket burnouts. Since some users are still reporting these symptoms, it seems unlikely that the problem has been completely resolved. I’m curious about AMD’s position and response regarding this issue.

AMD Response – AMD takes quality very seriously. To this end, we work closely with board partners during product and BIOS development to ensure that products operate within specification limits.

This issue arises because some ODM BIOSes do not adhere to AMD’s recommended values. AMD’s position is fundamentally to provide the highest quality products through thorough testing.

We always recommend everyone update their motherboard BIOS to the latest version. This is because it incorporates additional features, performance improvements, and troubleshooting solutions.

One thing to add is that one of the downsides of the flexibility AMD offers is that competing platforms often limit the number of motherboard and CPU combinations available for a given platform.

AMD, on the other hand, offers a wide range of combinations, and also supports PBO and overclocking. This means there are a vast number of possible scenarios. While this is a complex issue, we are working closely with our partners to resolve issues and further evolve the platform.

AMD did not mention any specific motherboard manufacturers when discussing CPU/motherboard socket burnouts. AMD’s advice is for their users to update their BIOS’ regardless of their chosen motherboard vendor. This will keep users up to date with the latest motherboard optimisations, fixes, and other changes. These updates will also provide support for new CPUs, which is great news for upgraders.
