ASRock motherboards linked to AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU failures
Most reported AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU failures on Reddit are on ASRock motherboards – (Updated)
PC builders on the ASRock Subreddit (via Tom’s Hardware) have noticed a startling trend. Out of 42 reported AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU failures on the platform, 32 of 42 cases were on ASRock motherboards. This information was gathered across various subreddits by a user called “natty_overlord.”
AMD and ASRock are reportedly aware of the issue. However, what is causing these CPU failures is currently unknown. Some Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPUs appear to be dead on arrival. Others die within hours, days, or weeks. Some CPUs die during heavy loads, while others appear to die during startup. There was also a report that a user was able to “revive” their CPU using BIOS flashback.
While most dead Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPUs reports are from users of ASRock motherboards, similar cases have been reported with other manufacturers. Regardless, the vast majority of cases are on ASRock motherboards. As such, AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU purchasers should avoid ASRock motherboards until this issue is resolved. (Update – ASRock has new BIOS files available with memory compatability fixes)
AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D is selling like hot cakes, and almost all of these CPUs are running without any issues. CPU failures are rare. Regardless, it is concerning that a majority of CPU failures appear to be happening on motherboards from a single manufacturer. Will ASRock be able to address these issues with new BIOS updates?

– Update – ASRock comments on Ryzen 7 9800X3D failures
ASRock has released a statement saying that “misinformation is being spread.” The company has said the CPUs are not working due to memory compatibility issues. In other words, they are claiming that their motherboards are not killing AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPUs.
The company has released new BIOS updates (see here) for their AM5 motherboards to address this issue. Note that AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D was released in November 2024. It took ASRock over three months to uncover and address this issue.
We will release an official release with more details later, but since there is a lot of misinformation being spread, here is a quick note! The bottom line is that it is not broken. It is just that some CPUs do not start due to memory compatibility issues.
