DRAM desperation – V-Color launches 1+1 DDR5 kits with one dummy module

V-COLOR has started selling single DIMM DRAM kits with an extra “filler” module

V-Color has officially released new “1 +1 Value Pack” DDR5 memory kits for AMD Ryzen systems. These kits include a single DDR5 DRAM module and a second “RGB Filler NON-DRAM solution”. This gives users the appearance of a dual-channel memory system with a single DDR5 memory module.

Currently, these new DDR5 “value pack” kits are available in 16GB (16GB x1) and 24GB (24GB x1) kits. With two matching kits, users can create a dual-channel system that appears to have four matching DRAM modules. Basically, buyers can claim to have a more premium PC by using these DRAM modules.

Flexibility, but at a cost

Let’s face it, DDR5 memory is incredibly expensive right now. For many people, investing in a single DRAM module now and another later makes a lot of sense. Yes, having only one DRAM module will prevent users from accessing the increased bandwidth/performance of dual-channel memory. That said, for many users, it may make sense to purchase one DRAM module now and another later.

In effect, these 1+1 DRAM kits and their filler modules will help PC builders have an aesthetically pleasing system while they save up money to buy more memory. These new DDR5 memory kits have very “fake it until you make it” vibes.

Right now, V-COLOR’s Manta DDR5 XSky is available in a 16 GB configuration, while the Manta DDR5 XFinity comes in a 24 GB configuration. Both V-COLOR’s DRAM modules and their filler modules are RGB-illuminated, with V-COLOR using patented technology to synchronise the RGB lighting across their DDR5 memory modules (U.S. Patent No. US 10,285,273 B1).

Desperate times call for desperate measures. It is strange to think that “fake RAM” is seen as a solution to some of the problems with today’s memory market. Until supply improves or the AI industry implodes, DRAM will remain expensive. That means that V-Color is unlikely to be the only DRAM manufacturer to create fake modules like this.
