AMD confirms Zen 6 “Mustang Peak” Ryzen Threadripper CPUs with PCIe 6.0

AMD confirms its next-generation Zen 6 Threadripper Pro CPU plans with PCIe 6.0 support

AMD documentation has officially confirmed that its next-generation Zen 6 Threadripper Pro CPUs will use a new “TR6” CPU platform. Based on this documentation, AMD’s Zen 6 Threadripper CPUs will use 2nm Zen 6 CPU cores and will support DDR5 memory and PCIe 6.0 connectivity.

Sadly, AMD has not unveiled detailed specifications for its next-generation Threadripper series CPUs. However, their use of a new socket/platform implies some significant upgrades. Today’s Ryzen Threadripper CPUs use AMD’s TR5 platform and support up to 96 CPU cores, 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes, and TDPs of up to 350W. With TR6, we can expect a PCIe 6.0 upgrade, and can likely expect higher CPU core counts and memory channels.

This information came to our attention through IntaLatX64. They expect AMD’s new Threadripper CPUs to use the same Zen 6 CCDs as AMD’s Ryzen desktop CPUs. If that is the case, these CPUs should feature 12-core Zen 6 CCDs with 48MB of L3 cache each. That’s 50% more cores and L3 cache than the CCDs used for AMD’s Zen 3, 4, and 5 CPUs.

What’s AMD’s plan for TR6 Threadripper?

It is currently unknown when AMD plans to release its next-generation Threadripper CPUs. AMD will likely launch Zen 6 first on EPYC and Ryzen desktop CPU platforms. Threadripper is typically a late addition to any new AMD product generation. With this in mind, we expect a mid-to-late 2027 launch for Threadripper at the earliest.

It is also unclear if AMD has similar segmentation plans for its TR6 platform as TR5. TR5 motherboards were available in TRX50 (HEDT) and WRX90 (Pro/Workstation) forms. Will the same be true for TR6?
