Valve sunsets Steam Deck LCD spare parts on iFixit

Valve is “starting to sunset” spare parts for its Steam Deck LCD

iFixit has confirmed that Valve is “starting to sunset” parts for its Steam Deck LCD, leaving owners unable to acquire replacement parts for their handhelds. This came to light after a would-be battery buyer emailed iFixit, who confirmed that “it is looking less likely that we will continue receiving OEM Steam Deck LCD batteries”.

Valve’s Steam Deck LCD launched in February 2022, and many long-term users are now finding that their batteries have degraded over time. iFixit has confirmed that they are searching for alternative parts. For now, Steam Deck LCD owners cannot purchase replacement batteries from iFixit. It may only be a matter of time before other Steam Deck LCD parts become unavailable.

According to iFixit, they want to order more spare parts from Valve. Valve is no longer supplying replacement parts to iFixit. We are now reaching the part of the Steam Deck’s life cycle where spare parts will be needed to keep older handhelds in good repair. Earlier this year, Valve increased the price of its Steam Deck OLED models by over 35%. This makes spare parts for existing Steam Decks more vital than ever.

To add clarity: it’s not that we’re choosing to not stock these anymore. Unfortunately, Valve is just starting to sunset these parts. We’re looking at alternatives!

A bad look for Valve

Valve promoted the repairability of its Steam Deck handheld when it launched in 2022. Valve partnered with iFixit to sell official spare parts for the handheld. Valve ended production of its Steam Deck LCD less than a year ago, and they have already stopped supplying spare parts to iFixit. Valve sunsetting replacement parts is a slap in the face to users who expected official replacement parts to remain available. Valve’s failure to supply Steam Deck LCD parts less than a year after their last device sold sets a bad precedent.

Thankfully, third-party batteries are available for Valve’s Steam Deck LCD. Regardless, Valve has weakened the value of all future repairability claims by ending official support for some parts this quickly. If new device purchasers can’t get official parts within a year of purchase, are Valve’s official repairability claims valid?
