RPCS3 moves closer to PS3 emulation without Sony Firmware
RPCS3 now emulates the PlayStation 3’s “cellSysmodule” without Sony firmware
Thanks to a developer called “capriots”, RPCS3 has taken a huge step towards firmware-free PlayStation 3 (PS3) emulation by implementing a system module called “cellSysmodule” within the emulator. Until now, RPCS3 relied on loading PlayStation 3 firmware and utilising Sony code to utilise this feature.
This step brings RPCS3 one step closer to its long-term goal of operating without PlayStation 3 firmware. This will remove the emulator’s reliance on Sony code, removing the need for PlayStation 3 firmware.
RPCS3’s implementation of cellSysmodule was merged into the emulator’s code at the start of this month. Now, it is utilised by RPCS3 by default. This change has not resulted in any loss in game compatibility for RPCS3. In fact, the emulator recently reached a major milestone, achieving “Playable” status for over 75% of the PlayStation 3’s game library.
You will be able to play PS3 games WITHOUT installing the PS3 firmware in the future!
Another PS3 system module – cellSysmodule – is now fully implemented on RPCS3 instead of being loaded from the PS3 firmware, thanks to capriots, bringing us a bit closer to this long-term goal.

RPCS3 users must still install PlayStation 3 firmware to run games. While cellSysmodule support has not changed anything on the surface, it is a critical step towards a major RPCS3 milestone.
While this update does not boost game compatibility or boost performance, it takes RPCS3 one step closer towards full independence from Sony code. In the long term, that will make RPCS3 easier to install and use. Copying PS3 firmware from a console isn’t easy, so removing that step would be amazing.
As always, the RPCS3 team are doing amazing work. The PlayStation 3 is one of the most complex consoles ever designed, so much so that many once considered emulation impossible. Now, the RPCS3 emulation team has made 75% of the console’s library playable, and it’s only a matter of time before the list of playable games gets larger. Well done to everyone involved.
