Intel confirms its “new core” is coming to desktops first, not Xeon

Intel is bringing its next-generation CPU core to desktop first, unlike AMD

Intel has confirmed that it has a “new core” architecture and that this “new core” will be coming to desktop first. This approach contrasts AMD, who have chosen to launch its Zen 6 CPU cores to datacenter users first as EPYC series processors.

Intel’s Robert Hallock has confirmed Intel’s desktop-first approach. While he did not reference Intel’s long-rumoured Nova Lake CPU platform, he says that enthusiasts will be able to “do the math”. In other words, this is an indirect confirmation that Intel’s upcoming Nova Lake CPUs will feature desktop-first CPU cores that should come to Xeon platforms later.

I have a new core. It’s coming to desktop first. I mean, I hope enthusiasts do the math about that one, and that’s all I’m going to say,

– Intel’s Robert Hallock to Tom’s Hardware

Sadly, Hallock did not unveil the specifications of Intel’s “new core” design or any architectural enhancements.

Hallock’s statement confirms that PC enthusiasts will see Intel’s latest tech on desktop first, at least with Nova Lake. With AMD, PC enthusiasts are still waiting for what Zen 6 will bring to desktop PCs. As it stands, we can only guess at Zen 6’s desktop PC performance. With Intel, enthusiasts will be front and center.

We expect Intel to start discussing Nova Lake in more detail in the near future. Right now, Intel is setting expectations. PC enthusiasts are getting a desktop-first CPU core design with a new architecture. No mobile-focused products or server-focused designs. Desktop first! That’s great news for PC enthusiasts.
