GTA 6 targets 30 FPS on PS5, 60 FPS mode may not be possible

Grand Theft Auto VI does not target 60 FPS on current-generation consoles

Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) is the best-looking game of this generation, and analysts have long suspected it targets 30 FPS on consoles to maximise graphical fidelity. Now, it has been confirmed that GTA 6 will target 30 FPS on consoles, with Flow Games stating as such in a recent video.

Citing Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson, GTA 6’s Lead Developer, Flow Games stated that Grand Theft Auto VI targets 30 FPS on consoles. That said, the developer did not rule out a potential 60 FPS option, saying he would need to “consult the technical team” about it.

According to Rob Nelson, Lead Developer and Co-director at Rockstar North, during this development period, the consoles are running the game at 30 frames per second.

According to the director, it is still necessary to consult the technical team to determine if there will be a 60 FPS option at launch (or in the future). He also emphasizes that he does not currently have details on resolution and other technical qualities, such as the use of Ray Tracing, but the performance, for now, is 30 FPS.

Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look ran at 30 FPS on PS5

Yesterday, Rockstar released its “An Extended Look” gameplay reveal of Grand Theft Auto VI. This GTA VI showcase is now available as a 14.2GB download. We have downloaded this video and confirmed that it runs at 30 FPS. Sorry, GTA fans, it looks like GTA 6 will not run at 60 FPS on consoles.

Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 both launched with 30 FPS targets on consoles. Grand Theft Auto V only gained 60 FPS support with its PS5 and Xbox Series X/S “Expanded and Enhanced” versions. Red Dead Redemption 2 is still capped at 30 FPS on consoles, even on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

If nothing else, capping Grand Theft Auto 6 at 30 FPS would match all recent Rockstar Games releases.

Will a 60 FPS mode be possible on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X?

While Rob Nelson said he would consult his technical team about a 60 FPS mode, a 60 FPS mode likely won’t be technically feasible. If GTA 6 uses all of the CPU resources on current-generation consoles, there won’t be enough overhead to push for higher framerates. Even if the game runs at a lower resolution to free up GPU resources, you also need extra CPU power to push games to 60 FPS.

A more likely option is a 40 FPS mode for GTA VI on consoles connected to 120Hz screens. This is more technically feasible than a full 60 FPS mode. Many games already offer similar modes. This includes Starfield, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and The Last of Us Part I/II Remastered.

If Rockstar cannot make a 60 FPS mode work on current-generation consoles, it may be feasible on PC or next-generation consoles. These systems should have more CPU and GPU resources. This will make higher-framerate modes more viable, along with extra graphical upgrades.
