Nvidia DLSS 5 is launching tomorrow with NBA 2K27

3D-guided Neural Rendering is coming to PC gamers tomorrow with NBA 2K27

Nvidia announced that DLSS 5 launches tomorrow with NBA 2K27, giving RTX 50 series GPU owners access to 3D-Guided Neural Rendering. Using DLSS 5, Nvidia is taking a major step towards Hollywood-grade photorealism.

DLSS 5 uses AI to generate rich lighting and material details in games. This can uplift gaming visuals beyond today’s hardware capabilities, allowing artists to achieve their real vision.

With this tech, artists can guide a deterministic AI to enhance visuals in ways traditional methods can’t. It can deliver lighting effects that would require a practically uncountable ray tracing ray count to achieve. In other words, Nvidia is using AI to deliver visual improvements that would be impossible without a monumental leap in GPU performance. Even then, it would take artists incredible time and effort to replicate these effects.

AI that preserves artistic intent

Game developers control DLSS 5. By using a game’s output as a baseline, DLSS 5’s output is grounded to a game’s original visuals. Developers also control the intensity of DLSS 5 and its output, ensuring it doesn’t change their game’s visuals in unintended ways. Developers can also choose which objects and characters DLSS 5 affects, focusing its rendering where they want it. Additionally, developers can choose from several DLSS 5 models, allowing them to select the one that best suits their style.

In NBA 2K27, DLSS 5 improves lighting while retaining the accuracy of facial geometry scans from real-world athletes. Light interacts with skin more accurately, and players look more life-like and less “gamey”. If nothing else, this example shows that DLSS 5 doesn’t change the geometry of in-game characters. If it did, it would make the game’s athlete facial scans useless and make the game’s real-world NBA players look like other people.

DLSS 5 is launching first with NBA 2K27 on September 3rd. More games will support DLSS 5 later this year. Nvidia is working to improve DLSS 5 performance and deliver even higher image quality.
