Acer wows with its Project DualPlay Mini PC concept
Acer’s Project DualPlay Mini is a PC gaming handheld and laptop in one
For the past few years, PC gamers have had a few options if they wished to take their gaming hobby on the go. Gaming laptops have long been the primary choice in this category, but Valve’s Steam Deck and other handheld gaming PC have quickly gained traction as a mobile gaming competitor. With its Project DualPlay Mini, Acer decided to bring these two options together into one device, and it’s pretty awesome.
This PC gaming handheld features a flip-out keyboard and a flip-around screen, letting users switch between handheld and laptop modes. If you need a keyboard, this handheld has one. Prefer to use a controller? Enter handheld mode.
In handheld mode, this system uses standard analog sticks, a D-pad, ABXY, and shoulder buttons. In laptop mode, this device has a compact keyboard and no mouse pad, so users will need a standalone mouse. The system can also be connected to external screens for desktop use.
Acer has not unveiled the full specifications of this prototype. Many aspects of this device come from the Predator Atlas 8, but this is its own thing. In some respects, its specifications do not matter, as this PC is a concept product, not a real product. Don’t expect to be able to buy a device like this anytime soon.
The best of both worlds, or a sacrifice too far?
While a device that can act as a gaming handheld and a standalone laptop seems appealing, it is hard to see one like this excelling. As a handheld, this PC seems bulky, and the added weight of its keyboard and transforming mechanisms may make it hard to use. As a laptop, it’s small and feels suboptimal. There’s a reason netbooks disappeared as a product category, and this device seems to have similar form-factor pitfalls.
Don’t get me wrong, the appeal of having one device instead of two certainly exists. That said, it’s hard to see this device making it to market, at least in large quantities.
