One real, one fake – V-Color’s 1+1 DDR5 DRAM kits are now available for purchase

V-Color’s 1+1 DDR5 value packs are now available in the UK, with pre-orders starting first at Overclockers UK. These two-stick memory kits come with one real DDR5 module and one fake DDR5 module, giving users the appearance of a dual-channel memory kit at a lower price. Both modules are RGB-illuminated, giving users a strong system aesthetic, and they’re available in black and white to match their PCs’ aesthetic preferences.

With DRAM being as expensive as it is, this solution gives PC builders 16GB modules with relatively tight CL28/CL30 timings. At £209.99-£218.99, these kits are reasonably priced in today’s market. That said, these prices are a tough ask given how inexpensive full 32GB DDR5 DRAM kits were available for this time last year.

Flexibility, but at a cost

Let’s face it, DDR5 memory is incredibly expensive right now. For many people, investing in a single DRAM module now and another later makes a lot of sense. Yes, having only one DRAM module will prevent users from accessing the increased bandwidth/performance of dual-channel memory. That said, for many users, it may make sense to purchase one DRAM module now and another later.

In effect, these 1+1 DRAM kits and their filler modules will help PC builders have an aesthetically pleasing system while they save up money to buy more memory. These new DDR5 memory kits have very “fake it until you make it” vibes.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. It is strange to think that “fake RAM” is seen as a solution to some of the problems with today’s memory market. Until supply improves or the AI industry implodes, DRAM will remain expensive. That means that V-Color is unlikely to be the only DRAM manufacturer to create fake modules like this.
