AMD’s FSR 4 Upscaling is now available on Xbox Series X/S

AMD FSR 4 Upscaling has arrived on Xbox Series consoles

FSR Upscaling 4.1.2 is now available on Xbox Series X/S consoles as part of Microsoft’s new October 2026 Game Development Kit (GDK). Now, Xbox console games can be created with ML-based upscaling for the first time. Both AMD’s FSR 4 Full and FSR 4 Lite models will be available on Xbox’s Series X and Series S consoles. This lets developers choose between maximum upscaling quality and boosted FSR performance.

AMD and Xbox have also included samples showing developers how to integrate FSR 4 into their games. The same GDK also includes instructions for bringing FSR 4 to ROG Xbox Ally handhelds.

FSR 4.1.2 performance on Xbox Series X/S

FSR 4.1.2 on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S is availabe as INT8 models in “full” and “lite” forms. Below, Xbox has included the computational cost of using FSR 4 on Xbox Series consoles. Note that output resolution and model type affect FSR 4’s performance on Xbox Series consoles.

With FSR 4, developers should be able to deliver improved image quality in their games. This should be especially true for games using AMD’s older FSR 2/3 upscalers. Given FSR 4’s performance cost, developers will need to decide what FSR 4 model and output resolution is ideal for their game based on their own quality and performance testing.

Console Upscaling ML Model (INT8) Output resolution Time (ms)
XBOX Series X FSR4 Lite 1440p 1.29 ms
XBOX Series X FSR4 Lite 4K 2.75 ms
XBOX Series X FSR4 Full 1440p 1.95 ms
XBOX Series X FSR4 Full 4K 3.86 ms
XBOX Series S FSR4 Lite 1080p 1.9 ms
XBOX Series S FSR4 Lite 1440p 3.4 ms
XBOX Series S FSR4 Full 1080p 2.9 ms
XBOX Series S FSR4 Full 1440p 5.2 ms

Adding FSR 4 to Microsoft’s new GDK should give current-generation consoles a much-needed image-quality boost. That said, game developers and publishers are unlikely to revisit their older games to upgrade to AMD’s newest upscaler. This means that FSR 4’s benefits will mostly impact new/upcoming console games.
