AMD reveals the world’s first 64-core HEDT processors, the Ryzen Threadripper 3990X

AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper 3rd Generation lineup is already delivering earthshattering performance to the HEDT market, but that doesn’t mean that AMD can’t do better.

That’s right, AMD has a bigger Ryzen Threadripper processor up its sleeve, delivering 64-cores, 128-threads and 288MB of combined L2 and L3 cache. Yeah, AMD has created a HEDT processor that has two times as many cores as their Ryzen Threadripper 3970X, a processor that has already put Intel’s HEDT offerings to shame.

Sadly, AMD has only confirmed to us the processor’s combined cache sizes; it’s 280W TDP and the CPU’s insane core/thread count. This processor will presumably release on AMD’s TRX40 motherboard platform, delivering content creators more cores than any single-socket HEDT processor before it.

Given AMD’s naming scheme, it seems likely that a 48-core Ryzen Threadripper 3980X processor is also in the works, but so far AMD has not announced such a processor.

So what’s different about the Ryzen Threadripper 3990X when compared to the 3970X? That’s simple; the processor features eight 8-core CPU chiplets when compared to the Threadripper 3970X’s 4 8-core chiplets. From what we can tell, the processor’s 12nm I/O die remains the same as other Threadripper processors.

AMD has told us to expect to hear more in 2020. Our guess is that the Threadripper 3990X will be showcased at CES 2019.
