AMD will supply Ryzen 2nd Gen users with Boot Kits to update their BIOS

There has been a lot of commotion on social media surrounding AMD’s Ryzen 2nd Generation processors, mostly surrounding the company’s support mechanisms.

One of these issues became apparent when a Reddit user (Mariomariamario) reported that AMD refused to provide him with a “Boot Kit” upon request. A “Boot Kit” a loan CPU that can be used to update the BIOS files of older AM4 motherboards, which may not ship with out of the box support for Raven Ridge (Ryzen Vega) or Ryzen 2nd Generation processors out of the box.

This thread quickly went out of control, with many users calling this an “anti-consumer” practice or other, less flattering language. We have spoken with an AMD representative this morning to get to the truth of this issue, after which we were given the following quote from James Prior, AMD’s Chief Product Manager.

this is an oversight – AMD will support requests for boot kits if you have a 300 series motherboard and a 2nd Gen Ryzen or Ryzen with Radeon Vega graphics processor and can’t boot because of BIOS version. Sorry for the confusion, this is being updated now.

To make things clear, AMD will support users of 300-series AM4 motherboards with processor “boot kits” if they need to upgrade their BIOS files for Ryzen 2nd Generation support. Sadly, some of these initial requests didn’t register as intended, though AMD is currently updating their system to provide Boot kits to Ryzen 2nd Generation users.

Below are instructions on how to ask for a “Boot Kit Solution” from AMD’s RMA services. AMD’s full support article for Ryzen 2nd Generation Boot/BIOS issues is available to read here.

AMD will supply Ryzen 2nd Gen users with Boot Kits to update their BIOS'

AMD has committed to supporting their AM4 socket until 2020, which means that AM4 will support future product generations and require more BIOS updates moving forward to operate correctly with AMD’s next-generation hardware.

With their “Boot Kit” approach AMD has made it easy for those who purchase older motherboards to support AMD’s latest processors, showcasing a level of consumer friendliness that is not often seen within the industry. AMD is willing to loan CPUs to their users to conduct BIOS updates, which while costly and time-consuming is an effort which showcases AMD’s willingness to go the extra miles for their users.
