AMD X870/X870E AM5 Motherboard Pricing Rundown

AMD’s new X870/X870E motherboards were more affordable than we expected

When AMD revealed their X870 and X870E motherboard chipsets, we thought this new generation of motherboards would be expensive. After all, AMD has mandated 40Gbps USB4 ports on these new motherboard designs. Beyond that, P{CIe Gen 5 support would become mandatory for graphics and storage. Those upgrades have a cost, so we expected X870/X870E to be more expensive than X670/X670E. We were wrong.

AMD’s new X800 series AM5 motherboards are now available in the UK. Shockingly, the cheapest X870 motherboards available were cheaper than the least expensive X670 motherboards. Furthermore, we found that many premium X870/X870E designs were cheaper than their X670/X670E counterparts. With their new motherboard chipsets, AMD is delivering more functionality without a major price increase. That’s great news for PC builders.

Below, we have recorded the pricing of all launch da X870/X870E motherboards available through Overclockers UK and Scan. One highlight is the ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Hero, which costs £576.98. Note that the ROG Crosshair X670E Hero costs £619.99 at Scan UK.  Yes, ASUS’ new X870E model costs less than its last-generation counterpart.

Today’s AMD X870 launch has left us excited about what’s coming next

If I am honest, I am sick of seeing motherboard prices rise. It is refreshing to see that X870 has been able to deliver more features without an increase in motherboard pricing. Yes, X870 remains expensive, but it is worth remembering that X870/X870E is AMD’s high-end consumer motherboard chipset. Lower-cost AMD 800-series AM5 motherboards will be released in 2025. Let’s hope B850 will deliver similar changes to AMD’s lower-end motherboard lineup.

With their newest motherboards, AMD has successfully delivered more for less. This is good news for consumers, and we hope this trend continues.
