AMD’s Precision Boost 2 tech can work on AMD’s X370 motherboards

Kyle Bennet from HardOCP has been digging into AMD’s latest Ryzen 2nd Generation processors and their support on the company’s last-generation X370 chipset, hoping to determine whether or not new features like Precision Boost 2.0 are available on the platform.

After discussing the topic with AMD directly, HardOCP released a brief article confirming that Precision Boost 2 will be available on X370 motherboards which have “appropriate firmware”, which means that motherboard makers can upgrade their existing X370 motherboards with support for this new feature.

This feature parity explains why other members of the tech press have found that AMD’s new Ryzen 2nd Generation processors can offer seemingly identical performance on X370 and X470 motherboards. Both platforms can support Precision Boost 2, giving X470 no additional performance boosting features, aside from generalised design refinements which can have an impact on memory overclocking.

In a follow-up article, Kyle Bennet confirmed that all of MSI’s latest X370 BIOS’ offer support for Precision Boost 2, giving owners of MSI X370 motherboards the ability to access all of Ryzen 2nd Generation’s performance out of the box.

Please note that Precision Boost 2 will not be delivered to AMD’s 1st generation of Ryzen processors, either on 300 or 400 series AM4 motherboards. The reasoning behind this is simple, 1st generation Ryzen CPUs were not pre-tested or developed with this feature in mind, making this feature more than a mere tickbox away in a BIOS.
