Fake Ryzen 7 9800X3D sold by Amazon Germany

Amazon Germany sold a fake Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU to Hardware Busters

Amazon.de (Germany) has been found to have sold a fake Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU, selling it to Aris from Hardware Busters. Obviously, before returning this counterfeit product, Hardware Busters released an article and YouTube video on the processor.

Amazon.de listed this CPU as “New,” and they sold it directly. This CPU was not sold by a third party, nor was it a “used” or “Amazon Warehouse” product. Amazon sold this fake CPU as a legitimate product, putting into question their PC components supply chain.

Upon opening this CPU’s box, it was obvious that this Ryzen 7 9800X3D was fake. The CPU had an old AM3/AM4 style IHS, and the processor wasn’t an LGA processor. This CPU has pins on its rear, and is clearly an altered AM3/AM4 CPU. Basically, this is an older AMD CPU with a sticker on top.

Hardware Busters have returned this CPU to Amazon, saying that it may take up to three weeks to get their money back. Not only has this event wasted Hardware Buster’s time/money, it has also delayed its CPU review testing.

This isn’t the first time a fake Ryzen 7 9800X3D has been sold.

Recently, there have been reports of real-looking counterfeit Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPUs appearing in China. This is not one of those CPUs. This processor is an obvious fake, and it’s unclear how this CPU was able to be sold as a “new” product.

Note that this CPU is an older AMD FX series CPU with a sticker on top.

Typically, we would recommend that CPU buyers only purchase products from trusted retailers, or on platforms with strong return policies. Amazon clearly has some kind of supply chain issue. As a result of this, they have sold a counterfeit product to a customer. Amazon needs to uncover how this occurred, and take steps to remove false products from circulation. If not, they will become a retailer that cannot be trusted when it comes to PC components. Also, AMD should also investigate this issue, as reports of “fake CPUs” cannot be good for their reputation.
