MSI Breaks DDR4 World Record With 5608MHz Memory

MSI and their in-house overclocker Toppc are continuing to push the envelope when it comes to DDR4 overclocking, pushing past the 5.6GHz barrier with an Intel Core i9-9900K, an MSI Z390I Gaming Edge AC motherboard and Kingston DDR4 memory modules. 

In all, MSI’s Toppc managed to push his Kingston memory DIMMs to 5608MHz, but in the process, his i9-9900K needed to be clocked at 816MHz, have all but two cores disabled and have hyperthreading de-activated. Beyond that, this overclock was achieved using LN2 (liquid nitrogen) cooling. 

Previously, the world record memory overclock was held by the Hong Kongese overclocker Hocayu, how utilised G.Skill memory and an ASUS ROG Maximux XI Gene motherboard, which means that this new record has been completed with different hardware from competing brands and overclockers, showcasing how turbulent the extreme-grade memory overclocking space can be.

Since the introduction of DDR4 memory, the market has changed tremendously. 1600MHz DDR3 is no longer the norm, with 3200MHz DDR4 quickly becoming the dominant speed amongst high-end users. 

Next-generation DDR5 memory will push things further, with SK Hynix having already made 5200MHz DDR5 modules, representing a 60% clock speed advantage over 3200MHz DDR4. Not bad for an early DDR5 module. 

DDR5 DRAM is expected to explode in popularity moving into 2020 and account to 25% of DRAM market share in 2021 and 44% of market share in 2022, making investments in DDR5 DRAM technology vital for all major DRAM manufacturers. I wonder how high DDR5 memory overclocks will be?
