12V-2×6 Saviour? Aqua Computer launches its AMPINEL 12V-2×6 GPU power manager

Aqua Computer delivers active load balancing to 12V-2×6 GPUs with its AMPINEL add-on

Aqua Computer has officially released an active power management device for 12V-2×6 graphics cards called the “AMPINEL”. This device adds three features to 12V-2×6/12VHPWR (16-pin) graphics cards. These are active current balancing, monitoring, and emergency shutdown support. For €99.90, it promises to make the 12V-2×6 power standard safer using active current balancing. It can also be used to shut off a PC before any damage can be done.

The AMPINEL is designed to make GPUs with 16-pin power connectors safer. Active current balancing ensures power is distributed evenly, preventing individual cables from drawing excessive current and generating excess heat. This prevents cable melting and other issues. If too much current flows through a single cable, the AMPINEL can shut down the system to prevent heat buildup and cable damage. A shutdown occurs when the device measures more than 7.5A of current flowing through a single pin.

The fact that this needs to exist is a problem

Honestly, it is kinda sad that this kind of device needs to exist. This device is necessary only because the 12V-2×6 power standard has minimal overhead, and high-power 12V-2×6 GPUs do not support load balancing across the connector. In other words, this product exists only because the 12V-2×6/12VHPWR standard is flawed.

This device uses Aqua Computer’s AquaSuite software. It measures various values, such as voltage, current, power, and connector temperatures. The device also features an OLED screen and eight RGB lights, which can be used to present system information.

The Aqua Computer Ampinel is a €79.90 system saver

The Aqua Computer Ampinel is now available for €99.90. Originally, this device was due to be available for €7.9.90, with the product’s delay and price rise being attributed to extra development costs for software/firmware. Given its potential system-saving nature, this device will be a must-buy for many PC builders, overclockers, and reviewers. The device appears to be out of stock at Aqua Computer, though appears to be available to pre-order.
