Alienware’s 55-inch 120Hz OLED Gaming Display will ‘definitely’ be released

Earlier this week WCCFTech released a report which claimed that Alienware’s 55-inch 120Hz OLED gaming monitor may never make it to market, spawning a multitude of other reports on the matter.

Now, PC Gamer has weighed in and confirmed that Dell “definitely” plans to sell the monitor, confirming that the screen will be showcased at GamesCom 2019 and will be released before the end of the year. This lines up with the original CES reports of the screen, which listed an H2 2019 release window.

So what has caused all of this confusion? In a statement to PC Gamer, Dell confirmed that their 55-inch 120Hz PC gaming OLED was a “concept product” back at CES 2019, making it likely that Dell’s E3 2019 staff were simply misinformed about the product’s status. The screen was not showcased at E3, giving Dell/Alienware’s E3 team little reason to know much about the product. WCCFTech’s source was likely misinformed about the product, simple.

Below is a comment from a Dell representative to PC Gamer, who confirmed that the screen would target PC and console gamers and the screen will be showcased at Gamescom 2019 in August.

While this gaming monitor did start out as a ‘concept product’ back at CES this year, we can confirm     that it is definitely going to be available for sale in selected markets sometime in Q4 this year.
So, it is definitely going to hit the market.

Dell has also stated that the screen will support a form of “variable sync”, which likely means that the screen will support VESA Adaptive Sync, enabling the screen to offer VRR (variable refresh rate) functionality with both Nvidia and Radeon graphics cards. Alternatively, the display could also provide G-Sync support, though G-Sync compatibility through Adaptive-Sync is more likely.

As an OLED screen, HDR will be one of the biggest selling points of this display, thanks to the high contrast ratios that can be offered by OLED panels.
