AMD teases Multi Frame Generation with FSR update

AMD hits at Frame Generation “Upgrade Ratio Option” for RDNA 4 users

Last month, AMD confirmed at GDC 2026 that it was working on “ML-based multi-frame generation” as part of “FSR Diamond”. Now, it looks like AMD is getting ready to launch its first implementation of Multi Frame Generation, teasing a new “Frame Generation Upgrade Ratio” option on GPU Open.

Currently, AMD’s FSR “Frame Generation Upgrade” option upgrades supported games from AMD’s analytical Frame Generation to its ML-based Frame Generation. Soon, AMD’s drivers may add the option for Multi Frame Generation (MFG) with a new “Upgrade Ratio” option. This could enable 3x, 4x, or higher levels of frame generation.

Currently, AMD is the only major discrete GPU manufacturer not to offer Multi Frame Generation. Both Intel and Nvidia offer Multi-Frame Generation. Currently, AMD’s Frame Generation technology is limited to 2x. This means there is one generated frame for each traditionally rendered frame. FSR Multi Frame Generation is expected to be exclusive to AMD’s RDNA 4 graphics cards (and their successors).

AMD’s FSR Multi-Frame Generation update must fix FSR Frame Generation’s Frame Pacing Problems

If AMD wants to deliver MFG, it needs to first address the frame-pacing issues in today’s Frame Generation implementation. As it stands, AMD’s generated frames can be delivered too quickly, harming visual smoothness while causing issues with Variable Refresh Rate displays. If AMD can fix its frame pacing (by equally spacing its generated frames), FSR’s Frame Generation will be on par with Nvidia’s. Unless this is fixed, FSR Multi Frame Generation will not reach its potential.

Will Multi Frame Generation be limited to RDNA 4 and AMD’s new ML Frame Generation Technique? I guess we will find out soon.
