AMD unveils “FSR Diamond”, and its “natively optimised” for Project Helix

AMD is co-engineering its next-generation FSR tech with Xbox for Project Helix

AMD’s Jach Huynh has confirmed that AMD is working on its next-generation FSR technologies as part of a “deep co-engineering partnership” with Xbox. Xbox will support “FSR Diamond”, which will be “natively optimised” for Project Helix (Xbox’s next-generation console) and “deeply integrated into the GDK (Game Development Kit)”.

FSR Diamond is AMD’s successor to FSR Redstone. FSR Redstone includes AMD’s ML FSR Upscaling, ML Frame Generation, ML-powered Ray Regeneration, and ML-powered Radiance Caching technologies. With FSR Diamond, AMD has promised next-generation versions of these technologies.

Specifically, AMD has promised next-gen ML-based upscaling (FSR 5 Upscaling?), ML-based Multi Frame Generation (which is new for AMD), and next-generation ray regeneration for RT and Path Tracing. AMD also says that FSR Diamond is “built for next-gen neural rendering”.

Is FSR Diamond built for RDNA 5? Will RDNA 4 GPUs be left behind?

Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox is rumoured to use AMD RDNA 5 graphics. This means that FSR Diamond will be optimised for AMD’s RDNA 5 GPUs. There is speculation that FSR Diamond will only support RDNA 5 and newer AMD GPUs. If that is true, AMD RDNA 4 GPU users may be left behind.

So far, AMD has not commented on RDNA 4’s support for FSR Diamond. If AMD’s FSR Diamond tech requires a large boost in AI capabilities, today’s RDNA 4 GPUs may not be fast enough to run these new AI models. However, Nvidia has shown that even their oldest RTX GPUs can run the newest versions of DLSS. If AMD fails to deliver FSR Diamond support on RDNA 4, it will cement AMD’s reputation as a brand that doesn’t give long-term support for its products. That would be bad news for AMD and bad news for gamers.
