AMD transforms mobile gaming with their latest Ryzen AI 300 GPU features
AMD gives their Ryzen AI 300 CPUs a major gaming upgrade with AFMF2 and Variable Graphics Memory
AMD has released a new beta graphics driver for its Ryzen AI 300 series CPUs, giving these new mobile-focused gaming CPUs a huge gaming upgrade. For starters, the new drivers (preview driver here) add support for AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames 2 technology. Additionally, they bring a new feature called Variable Graphis Memory to the forefront.
AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames 2 technology is AMD’s second-generation driver-level Frame Generation technology. In short, it has a new performance mode, operates with lower latencies, and delivers higher levels of image quality. Furthermore, it supports more games thanks to the addition of OpenGL and Vulkan API support.
Variable Graphics Memory on Ryzen AI 300
Variable Graphics Memory (VGM) is a new feature for AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 series CPUs. It allows users to convert up to 75% of their available system memory into dedicated graphics memory. This will allow games with hardcoded minimum VRAM requirements to run on AMD’s new Radeon 800M integrated graphics. It can also slightly boost the performance of games with a lot of memory turnover.
This feature should make gaming on AMD’s new RDNA 3.5 integrated graphics much easier. Great news for laptop/handheld PC gamers.
Performance boost with Fluid Motion Frames 2 and VGM
We tested AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames 2 technology while playing Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. We were impressed, to say the least. The game appeared smoother, and we did not notice increased input latency. The good news is that similar benefits can be seen when using this feature with AMD’s new RDNA 3.5-based integrated graphics solutions.
With VGM, games like Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy now run with AMD’s integrated graphics. Add on Fluid Motion Frames, and gamers can achieve smoother framerates than anyone should expect from integrated graphics.
By using the right settings, AMD’s integrated graphics are now capable of delivering excellent gaming experiences. That said, discrete graphics solutions will always be able to do more given their increased power budget.
AMD is taking mobile gaming seriously, which is great news for gamers. If features like AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 can work well on integrated graphics, users should expect a strong experience using desktop discrete GPUs. These features are currently available with AMD’s preview drivers, though they are expected to exit preview later this year.
