ASUS officially launches their HC102 Windows 10 Mixed Reality Headset

Microsoft’s Windows 10 Mixed Reality platform released in late 2017, with a range of manufacturers shipping a variety of similarly headsets. Until now, ASUS has bided their time and made some tweaks to their own Mixed Reality Headset design, offering a polygonal aesthetic with several neat ergonomic features.

ASUS’ headset is called the HC102, which will ship for $429, which is slightly more expensive than the Oculus Rift, offering higher display resolutions of 1440×1440 per eye, compared to 1080×1200 on the Oculus Rift. The ASUS HC102 also features an inside-out tracking system which doesn’t require a network or cameras of sensors to monitor headset movement.

The HC102 weights a total of 400 grams, making it around 70 grams lighter than the Oculus Rift. The Headset also features a more PSVR-like design, which allows the headset’s mass to rest on the user’s forehead instead of on the strapped to your face approach of the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive.

Below is the headset’s general specifications;

– 95-degree field of view per eye, 105-degree field of view over both eyes.
– 1440×1440 resolution per eye, 2880×1440 in total
– 90Hz Refresh Rate
– 3.5mm audio jack support
– Includes two 6DoF motion controllers

ASUS promises a 10-minute setup experience with their new VR/Mixed Reality headset, with no need to set up external sensors or cameras. Instead, the headset will map the room itself using its built-in tracking cameras and the 32 LED lights on each motion controller.

One other interesting feature of the ASUS HC102 is its hinged design, which allows the headset to be lowered or raised from the users face with ease, unlike the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive where the VR headsets have to be removed entirely.
