HDMI 2.2 confirmed – Will be revealed at CES ahead of new GPUs
HDMI 2.2 will be revealed before AMD and Nvidia’s next-gen GPUs
Last month, we reported on the HDMI Forum’s plan to reveal their next-generation HDMI 2.2 specification. Now, this reporting has been further confirmed by Videocardz, who have gotten hold of an HDMI Forum Press Release that discusses a “new HDMI Specification release”.
The HDMI Forum plans to reveal its new HDMI standard on January 6th at 10 am in Las Vegas. This event will be hosted mere hours before AMD and Nvidia’s CES 2025 keynotes. This suggests both companies plan to incorporate HDMI 2.2 technology into their next-generation graphics cards.
Aligning the release of their new HDMI standard with next-generation GPU launches should help accelerate the adoption of this new standard. If neither AMD or Nvidia support HDMI 2.2, TV and monitor manufacturers will have little reason to adopt the new standard.
The HDMI Forum will be announcing a new HDMI Specification release. The new specification, with next-gen HDMI technology and higher bandwidth, enables a wide range of higher resolutions and refresh rates and will be supported with a new HDMI cable. New technology enables higher quality options now and in the future for content producers such as TV, movie and game studios, while enabling multiple distribution platforms.

Does the world need HDMI 2.2?
As it stands, HDMI 2.1 can offer users up to 48 Gbps of bandwidth. This places HDMI 2.1 behind DisplayPort 2.0/2.1, as it can deliver up to 80 Gbps of total bandwidth. These higher bandwidth levels enable support for higher resolutions, refresh rates, HDR, and more. Simply put, extra bandwidth will allow display manufacturers to create better/faster displays. The next generation of HDMI is coming, and it should push HDMI ahead of DisplayPort once again.
