LG delivers FreeSync Premium with its latest CX and GX OLED TV updates

In the US and Europe, LG has releases FreeSync Premium Compatible firmware for many of their latest OLED TVs, including their 2020 CX and GX products, enabling VRR support for Radeon users.

This new firmware is version 03.10.20, and it gives LG’s screens a variable refresh rate (VRR) range of 40-120Hz, below which AMD’s LFC (Low Framerate Compensation) technology kicks in. At 4K, this 40-120Hz VRR range is said to be available over HDMI 2.0 with 4:2:0 Chroma and 8-bit colour. The same level of VRR support is expected over HDMI 2.1, which should deliver higher levels of image quality at 120Hz, thanks to extended chroma and colour support. LG already has HDMI 2.1 on its TVs; we just need to wait for graphics cards to adopt the standard.

It is worth noting that this support requires FreeSync Premium to be enabled on a port-by-port basis and that this update reportedly disables Dolby Vision support on FreeSync enabled HDMI ports. If this works like LG’s G-Sync implementation, current-generation AMD graphics cards may be able to run at 1440p 120Hz over HDMI 2.0, though we have no way of confirming this.

FlatPanelsHD have confirmed that FreeSync support is coming to LG’s 4K BX and 8K ZX OLED TVs, but the firmware for these models hasn’t been finalised yet.

With their 2020 OLED TVs, LG already offered users G-Sync Compatibility, making LG the premiere OLED TV maker for PC gamers. VRR support eliminates tearing and can help to decrease input latency, making games appear smoother, more consistent and more responsive.

Users of LG’s 2020 CX and GX OLED TVs should already be able to update their TV’s firmware to enable FreeSync support.
