LG’s 2019 OLED TVs will support HDMI 2.1 and 120Hz refresh rates

LG has announced that their 2019 OLED TVs, and select NanoCell TVs, will support HDMI 2.1 to enable high frame rate (HFR) modes, supporting 120 frames per second.

Annoyingly, LG’s press release did not specify 4K 120Hz, but HDMI 2.1 is required to enable 4K resolutions at 120Hz, making it likely that 4K 120Hz is supported. Thankfully, this is not the only addition that HDMI 2.1 brings to the table.

On top of HFR support, HDMI 2.1 LG TVs will also support Variable Refresh Rates (VRR) and HDMI’s automatic low latency mode (ALLM), which are designed to eliminate stutter and screen tearing while lowering input latency, all of which are great upgrades for gamers.

And through the inclusion of HDMI 2.1 ports, all 2019 OLED TVs and selected NanoCell TVs with ThinQ AI will support high frame rate (HFR). The result is smoother and clearer motion at 120 frames per second for better rendering of fast-action content such as sports and action movies. Support for enhanced audio return channel (eARC) enables home theater enthusiasts to seamlessly utilize HDMI connectivity and enjoy the highest quality audio formats available with superb detail and depth. An excellent option for gamers, the new TVs are compatible with variable refresh rate (VRR) as well as automatic low latency mode (ALLM) which helps deliver a clean image, without stutter or tearing.

Later this year, LG also plans to release their 8K Z9 series TV, which will utilise OLED technology and offer 8K image upscaling. LG’s Gen 2 AL technology can also be used to refine HDR images to present what LG believes to be a superior final image, deciding to steer clear from Samsung’s HDR10 standard. LG’s 2019 4K OLED TVs will support HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision and Advanced HDR.
