LG’s SteamVR headset has been shown at the Korean VR Festival

LG’s SteamVR headset design has appeared in South Korean VR Festival, showcasing the headset for the first time since GDC 2017. This headset uses the same SteamVR technology as HTC’s Vive headset, though many of you will be able to see that its design is a little more akin to Sony’s PlayStation VR headset than HTC’s Vive.

This headset is designed to focus the mass of the headset on the user’s forehead, allowing the display to be worn more comfortably during extended display sessions. LG’s new VR HMD will be compatible with Valve’s SteamVR platform, giving the HTC Vive a direct competitor.

It is unknown if the specification of this headset have changed since GDC 2017, with that version boasting increased display resolutions when compared to HTC’s headset, offering a resolution of 1440×1280 per eye instead of the Vive’s 1200×1080 resolution.  This should allow LG’s new headset to offer clearer images and less noticeable aliasing due to its 42% increase in pixel count. LG’s new SteamVR display will also feature a 90Hz refresh rate, making this new HMD very similar to the HTC Vive outside of its resolution.

LG Steam VR headset specifications

  • – OLED display from LG

Right now it is unknown when this VR headset will hit the market, though it is expected to release sometime in 2018, possibly with Valve’s SteamVR 2.0 technology, which allows for the creation of more efficient/cheaper base stations/sensors.
