MSI bundles yellow 12V-2×6 power adapters with Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5080, and RTX 5090 series GPUs

MSI has built custom 12V-2×6 power adapters for their high-end RTX 50 series graphics cards

Nvidia has fully adopted the 12V-2×6 power standard with the launch of their GeForce RTX 50 series of graphics cards. This means that users of these GPUs will need a power supply that supports the 12V-2×6 standard. Alternatively, these GPUs can be powered using 12V-2×6 to PCIe 8-pin power adapters, which will ship with all RTX 50 series GPUs. Instead of using generic adapters, MSI has made the bold move of shipping their high-end GPUs with custom MSI-branded adapters, complete with coloured 12V-2×6 connectors. Videocardz were the first to spot this change.

What’s the purpose of these coloured connectors? They make it easy to spot if your 12V-2×6 connectors aren’t fully inserted. MSI started adopting this novel adapter colour scheme in 2023 with their 12VHPWR cables. Since then, these cables have been used on all of MSI’s 12V-2×6/12VHPWR compatible power supplies.

Note that MSI isn’t the only company that uses coloured 12V-2×6 power connectors. Seasonic has similar cables with blue connectors.

With its RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5080, and RTX 5090 GPUs, MSI will be shipping their own coloured 12V-2×6 power cables with their graphics cards. For their RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5080 models, adapters with three 8-pin PCIe power connectors are supplied. Note that these adapters are rated for up to 450W of power delivery. For their RTX 5090 GPUs, MSI will ship adapters with four PCIe 8-pin connectors. Note that these cables are rated for 600W of power delivery.

No special treatment for Nvidia’s RTX 5070

Sadly, MSI’s RTX 5070 graphics card will not ship with MSI’s custom 12V-2×6 power connectors. Instead, these GPUs will ship with Nvidia-branded adapters. Note that these adapters are powered using two 8-pin PCIe power connectors, allowing them to draw up to 300W of power.
