Nvidia admits that some RTX 5080 GPUs also have missing ROPs, lowering performance

Nvidia confirms that some RTX 5090, RTX 5080, and RTX 5070 Ti have missing ROPs

Nvidia has officially confirmed that some “early” RTX 5080 GPU models are affected by the same “missing ROPs” issue that affects some RTX 5090, RTX 5090D, and RTX 5070 Ti models. This confirms that every model in Nvidia’s RTX 5000 series lineup has been impacted by this issue.

Below is Nvidia’s official statement on the issue. The company has confirmed that owners of affected GPUs can contact their GPU’s manufacturer for a replacement. However, it is unknown when these replacements will be sent, as Nvidia’s RTX 50 series GPUs are sold out at most retailers.

Upon further investigation, we’ve identified that an early production build of GeForce RTX 5080 GPUs were also affected by the same issue. Affected consumers can contact the board manufacturer for a replacement,

What’s wrong? What do ROPs do?

ROPs are “Render Output Pipelines,” and they are a fundamental part of every modern GPU. They are specialised units that read and write pixel data information to and from a GPU’s frame buffer. They can also play a major role in pixel blending and anti-aliasing and other tasks. Simply put, they are an important part of any GPU, and having less of them can lower the gaming performance of any graphics card.

RTX 50 series GPUs that are affected by this ROPs issue deliver less overall gaming performance than their fully-enabled counterparts. While some games rely less on ROP performance than others, Nvidia claims that this issue has an “average graphical performance impact of 4%.”

Below is Nvidia’s amended statement on their “missing ROPs” issue. Nvidia claims that only 0.5% of GPUs are effected by this issue. Furthermore, they claim that the “production anomaly” that caused this has been “corrected.”

We have identified a rare issue affecting less than 0.5% (half a percent) of GeForce RTX 5090 / 5090D, RTX 5080, and 5070 Ti GPUs which have one fewer ROP than specified. The average graphical performance impact is 4%, with no impact on AI and Compute workloads. Affected consumers can contact the board manufacturer for a replacement. The production anomaly has been corrected.

Since Nvidia’s RTX 50 series is in short supply, it is unknown when all affected GPUs will be replaced. Furthermore, it remains to be seen if future RTX 50 series launches will be impacted by this issue.
