RTX 5080 discovered with Missing ROPs – Nvidia claimed this GPU wasn’t affected

The “Missing ROPs” problem is a lot larger than Nvidia claimed

Over the weekend, Nvidia released a statement claiming that only its RTX 5090, RTX 5090D, and RTX 5070 Ti were affected by its “missing ROPs” problem. Furthermore, the company claimed that only “0.5% of GPUs were affected. Today, we can confirm that an RTX 5080 has been discovered with missing ROPs. That means the problem involves more GPUs than Nvidia claimed.

So, what’s the problem here? The simple answer is that RTX 50 series GPU buyers may not get what they paid for. Having a GPU with fewer ROPs can significantly lower game performance, especially for lower-end GPU models. For the RTX 5080 below, having 8 fewer ROPs lowers the GPU’s ROP count by over 7%. That can be enough to drop an RTX 5080 to RTX 4080 performance levels in many games.

Today, Nvidia’s “missing ROPs” issue impacts all currently available RTX 50 series GPUs. Nvidia has claimed that the “production anomaly” that caused this has been “corrected.” However, this statement before it was known that it impacted the company’s RTX 5080 GPU. Does Nvidia have a larger problem to fix?

Today’s news raises many questions. Why didn’t Nvidia know that this issue affected its RTX 5080? Will it impact Nvidia’s RTX 5070 and RTX 5060 series GPUs? Could this issue affect more than the “0.5%” of GPUs that Nvidia claimed? Will this issue force Nvidia to delay its RTX 5070 launch?
