Nvidia gives their RTX 5080 a boost with faster GDDR7 memory
Nvidia’s RTX 5080 uses faster GDDR7 memory than the RTX 5090, claims report
According to wccftech, Nvidia has upgraded its upcoming RTX 5080 graphics card with faster GDDR7 memory modules. Specifically, Nvidia has opted to use 32 Gbps GDDR7 memory modules. Previously, the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 reportedly used 28 Gbps memory modules.
By moving to faster GDDR7 memory modules, Nvidia’s RTX 5080 should have 14% more memory bandwidth than before. Over a 256-bit memory bus, this should give Nvidia’s RTX 5080 16GB of memory with 1024 GB/s of total bandwidth. That’s more memory bandwidth than Nvidia’s RTX 4090, which uses 24GB of GDDR6X over a 384-bit memory bus.
At GTC 2024, Samsung showcased 28Gbps and 32Gbps GDDR7 memory modules. As such, we know that Nvidia can use faster 32Gbps GDDR7 memory modules. Furthermore, this upgrade makes earlier RTX 5080 performance claims much more believable. With more memory bandwidth than an RTX 4090, it makes sense that Nvidia’s RTX 5080 could be 10% faster.
Recent specifications leaks suggest that Nvidia’s RTX 5080 will have 10752 CUDA cores, a 256-bit memory bus, and 16GB memory. The GPU is said to feature a 400W TDP. There have also been claims that Nvidia plans to release a 24GB RTX 5080 GPU model.
