Nvidia officially releases GDDR6-powered RTX 4070 with “similar performance” to GDDR6X original
Nvidia to “improve supply” of their RTX 4070 with new GDDR6-based GPU models
It’s finally official. Nvidia’s long-rumoured GDDR6-powered RTX 4070 model is now an official product. Buried deep inside one of Nvidia’s Gamescom 2024 press released, Nvidia has revealed this new graphics card variant, promising gamers “similar performance in games and applications” to the GPU’s GDDR6X original.
Nvidia claims that this change in specifications will help make their RTX 4070 graphics card more readily available. This is allegedly due to a GDDR6X memory supply issue, which has forced Nvidia to use slightly slower GDDR6 (20 Gbps GDDR6 vs 21 Gbps GDDR6X) on their new RTX 4070 GPU models.
With this specifications change, Nvidia can prioritise their limited GDDR6X memory supplies on their higher-end GPU models. This is where the bandwidth of GDDR6X is most needed, and where a downgrade to GDDR6 would be more noticeable.
To improve supply and availability to meet strong demand, we’re introducing the GeForce RTX 4070 with extra fast GDDR6 memory. All of the other specs remain the same. It offers similar performance in games and applications.
It will be available from our graphics cards partners worldwide, starting in September. It is supported in today’s Game Ready Driver. For more details on the GeForce RTX 4070, visit the GeForce RTX 4070 family product page on GeForce.com.
Nvidia has confirmed that their new RTX 4070 model is supported by the company’s new GeForce 560.94 “Game Ready” GPU drivers. This driver’s release notes make no mention of support for this new GPU. Again, it seems clear that Nvidia doesn’t want much media coverage of this new RTX 4070 GPU variant.
Expect Nvidia’s new RTX 4070 models to become available at retailers soon.
