Nvidia’s new GDDR6-powered RTX 4070 GPUs are reportedly launching this month

Nvidia’s new RTX 4070 models are due to become available later this month

Nvidia appears to be getting ready to launch a new RTX 4070 model. This time, it isn’t a new SUPER, Ti, or Ti SUPER variant, but a new version of baseline RTX 4070. This time, Nvidia’s launching a GDDR6-powered RTX 4070 model, moving the model away from GDDR6X memory.

Why has Nvidia moved from GDDR6X to GDDR6? The simple answer is memory supply. Nvidia are reportedly facing a GDDR6X memory shortage, and their new RTX 4070 model will allow the company to focus its GDDR6X supply on higher-end graphics cards.

A new report from Board Channels has claimed that new GDDR6-powered RTX 4070 models will come to market “after August 20th”. Currently it is unknown if Nvidia will officially launch this GPU, or quietly bring this new GPU model to market.

The RTX4070 series models of various graphics card brands will be in short supply, and may be in short supply until at least the 20th. The new supply of RTX4070 GDDR6 memory will probably arrive after the 20th, and the supply may gradually ease.

By using GDDR6 memory, Nvidia’s new 4070 is slightly slower than its existing GDDR6X counterpart. This new GPU reportedly uses 20Gbps GDDR6 memory, which is 5% slower than the 21 Gbps memory used on GDDR6X-powered models. Thankfully, Nvidia’s RTX 4070 isn’t known to be overly bandwidth-limited. That said, a downgrade is a downgrade, even it if it is a small one.
