Nvidia RTX 3090 “CEO Edition” appears online with 48GB of GDDR6X memory

Images have started to circulate online regarding an RTX 3090 “CEO Edition” graphics card from Nvidia, a gold-clad RTX 3090 with a whopping 48GB of GGDR6X memory. If legitimate, this graphics card is Ampere at its finest. The only problem is that this “CEO Edition” is almost certainly fake. Let’s take about it. 

With 48GB of memory and a price tag of $3,499, this graphics card is targetted to a incredibly specific market. Those who want the raw horsepower of Nvidia’s RTX 3090 graphics card, but also need more memory capacity for their workloads. This means that the RTX 3090 has a very niche audience, as standard RTX 3090 graphics cards already feature 24GB of memory, which should be more than enough for most users.  

Is 48GB of GDDR6X even possible? 

The short answer to this question is no. A 48GB RTX 3090 is impossible today with GDDR6X memory. How do we know this? Micron has confirmed that it won’t have 2GB (16Gb) GDDR6X memory chips until 2021. This fact alone makes Nvidia’s RTX 3090 CEO Edition graphics card impossible today. No amount of extra money is going to make larger GDDR6X available earlier. 

Nvidia’s RTX 3090 CEO Edition could only feature 48GB of memory if it used GDDR6 memory, but this would cut down the RTX 3090’s memory bandwidth significantly. This configuration would give the CEO Edition more memory capacity and less overall performance. That’s not the kind of product that Jensen Huang (Nvidia’s CEO) wants his name on.  

It’s fake

While the gold accented cooler does look great, we cannot get past the fact that this product simply isn’t feasible within today’s marketplace. Based on what Micron has to say about it’s GDDR6X memory, Nvidia can’t build this graphics card right now. With that fact in mind, we wouldn’t expect this graphics card to be “coming soon” as some posters have suggested. 

Nvidia has released Titan V CEO Edition graphics cards in the past, and the company could do so again in the future. Right now we know that Nvidia cannot make this RTX 3090 CEO Edition graphics card, though that would change with 16Gb (2GB) GDDR6X memory chips become available in 2021.
