Nvidia RTX 5090 receives 8% performance boost for having too many ROPs
Nvidia RTX 5090 GPU found with 9% more ROPs than normal
– Update – As expected, Techpowerup has confirmed that this is an April Fool’s joke. No RTX 5090 GPU has been found that has extra ROPSs.
During their ROG Astral RTX 5090 LC testing, Techpowerup spotted something unusual. Their GPU had more ROPs than it should, 192 ROPs instead of 176. That’s two full ROP groups more than normal. In fact, this GPU has the maximum ROP count that Nvidia’s GB 202 silicon allows.
After lowering their GPU’s clock speeds to Founders Edition levels, it was found that this RTX 5090 was roughly 8% faster than Nvidia’s RTX 5090 Founders Edition on average. When using this overclocked GPU’s out-of-the-box settings, this GPU is a full 12% faster than Nvidia’s Founders Edition model.
This is not the only RTX 5090 GPU that shipped with an incorrect ROP count. However, most cases of this saw GPUs released with fewer ROPs than they should have. This “missing ROPs” issue impacted a small number of RTX 5090, RTX 5090D, RTX 5080, and RTX 5070 Ti graphics cards. Now, it looks like the reverse is true.

What should you do if you have an RTX 5090 GPU with too many ROPs? Nothing. Consider yourself blessed that you were lucky enough to get an RTX 5090 graphics card that’s more capable than others. Your GPU is more performant than other RTX 5090 GPUs, so there is no reason to trade it in.
This strange GPU makes us wonder what is happening at Nvidia to allow so many out-of-spec graphics cards to be released. These kinds of issues are not normal. This did not happen for any prior RTX GPU launch. Why is it happening now?
