Smooth Motion support is coming to RTX 40 series GPUs – It won’t be RTX 50 series exclusive for long

With the release of their GeForce 572.16 WHQL drivers for Windows PCs, Nvidia added “Smooth Motion” support to their Nvidia App. This new feature is exclusive to the RTX 50 series and can generate AI frames between traditionally rendered frames. This feature is Nvidia’s answer to AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames 2 technology, and Nvidia has confirmed that support for this feature will soon be expanded to RTX 40 series graphics cards.

Smooth Motion can add Frame Generation support to games that lack DLSS 3 (or newer). The feature currently supports DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games. This feature can be used to increase the smoothness of games with framerate limits or other games that could benefit from higher framerates.

Nvidia has confirmed that Smooth Motion will be coming to RTX 40 series GPUs with a “future update.” The feature needs more time for validation and QA before it becomes available on RTX 40 series GPUs.

NVIDIA Smooth Motion is a brand-new driver technology and requires time for validation and QA across multiple products. Support for GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs will be coming in a future update.

Nvidia’s Jacob Freeman has confirmed that Smooth Motions will not be as good as a native DLSS 3/4 game implementation. Comparatively, Smooth Motion will have higher latency and lower image quality. Regardless, Smooth Motion is a useful feature for games that lack native DLSS Frame Generation support.
