Nvidia’s giving their RTX 5080 faster GDDR7 memory than all other 50-series GPUs
Nvidia’s RTX 5080 uses faster GDDR7 memory than the RTX 5090, report claims
According to a report from Benchlife, Nvidia will give its upcoming RTX 5080 faster GDDR7 memory than all other RTX 50 series GPUs. While most of these incoming GPUs will use 28 Gbps GDDR7 memory, the 5080 will use faster 30 Gbps modules.
While 28 Gbps to 30 Gbps doesn’t sound like a big jump, it represents a 7.14% increase in memory bandwidth for Nvidia’s RTX 5080. That’s a considerable increase. This boost is even more significant compared to the GDDR6X memory used with Nvidia’s RTX 40 series GPUs. The fastest GDDR6X memory used on the RTX 40 series is the 23Gbps memory used on their RTX 4080 SUPER. The RTX 5080’s GDDR7 memory is over 30% faster than the GDDR6X memory used on the RTX 4080 SUPER.
Thanks to this boost in memory bandwidth, the RTX 5080 will feature almost as much memory bandwidth as Nvidia’s RTX 4090. Rumour has it that Nvidia’s RTX 5080 will be 10% faster than their RTX 4090. This makes sense, given their similar levels of raw memory bandwidth. If Nvidia’s RTX 50 series features any improvements to data caching and bandwidth management, performance levels greater than RTX 4090 should be achievable for Nvidia’s RTX 5080.
Nvidia’s RTX 5080 should be an impressive GPU
Recent specifications leaks suggest that Nvidia’s RTX 5080 will have 10752 CUDA cores, a 256-bit memory bus, and 16GB memory. The GPU is said to feature a 400W TDP. There have also been claims that Nvidia plans to release a 24GB RTX 5080 GPU model. However, this would require newer 3GB GDDR7 memory modules.
When it comes to high-end GPU performance, bandwidth is vitally important. Insufficient memory performance can limit computational performance. That’s one of the main reasons why Nvidia has adopted GDDR7 memory with its RTX 50 series. If Nvidia ever creates an RTX 50 “SUPER” series refresh, we can expect them to use faster GDDR7 memory. After all, GDDR7 support is in its infancy, and faster modules are coming.
