Nvidia’s GTX 1660 Super reveals the power of GDDR6 memory
Nvidia’s GTX 1660 released with a problem, it was memory limited, preventing the GPU’s allotment of 1,408 CUDA cores from achieving their fullest potential. How do we know this? Nvidia’s GTX 1660 Super promises framerate boosts of up to 20% without any changes to the GTX 1660’s GPU core.
That’s right, the GTX 1660 Super has the same 1,408 CUDA cores and the same base/boost clock speeds as its non-Super counterpart, making all performance improvements that the Super variant offers due to Nvidia’s use of GDDR6 memory.
So what makes the GTX 1660 Super, Super? GDDR6 memory. Upgrading the GTX 1660 with 14Gbps GDDR6 memory delivers a 75% boost in total memory bandwidth, giving the GTX 1660 Super more memory performance than a GTX 1660 Ti. Nvidia believes this memory upgrade is enough to give the GTX 1660 Super up to a 50% performance lead over the GTX 1060.
Alongside the GTX 1660 Super, Nvidia has also revealed their GTX 1650 Super, which features GDDR6 memory and uses a cut-down version of Nvidia’s GTX 1660 core. This allows the GTX 1650 Super to have 1,280 CUDA cores, which is the same as a GTX 1060 and gives it access to Nvidia’s superior Turning NVENC encoding engine, which is a feature that the GTX 1650 lacks.
