Nvidia’s may be preparing an RTX 3080 Ti to combat the Radeon RX 6000 series.

Rumour has it that Nvidia plans to launch a new graphics card called the RTX 3080 Ti, a new GPU which will sit in-between the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 with 12GB of VRAM and 9984 CUDA cores. This information comes from @kopite7kimi on Twitter.

This new graphics card is designed to combat AMD’s Radeon RX 6000 series, offering more performance than Nvidia’s RTX 3080 and lower pricing than the company’s 24GB RTX 3090. Given the small performance gap between the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090, Nvidia’s RTX 3080 Ti is expected to perform very similarly to an RTX 3090, as it only features 512 fewer CUDA cores.

Nvidia’s RTX 3080 Ti is expected to offer users 12GB of GDDR6 VRAM over a 384-bit memory bus, allowing Nvidia to deliver much lower retail pricing than its RTX 3090.

It is possible that these RTX 3080 Ti specifications were previously considered by Nvidia but were later abandoned in favour of their RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 designs. That said, Nvidia may decide to utilise this design should AMD’s RDNA 2 powered RX 6000 series give Nvidia’s Ampere lineup stronger than expected competition.
