At IFA 2019, Panasonic is showcasing what could be the future for LCD TV technology, revealing what they call “MegaCon”, a dual-panel monitor design that’s designed to deliver OLED-like performance and master-level screen accuracy.

“MegaCon” is shorthand for “Mega Contrast”, and uses a construction method that’s designed to provide OLED-like contrast levels by offering an alternative tale on the concept of local dimming. Instead of relying on backlight dimming, “MegaCon” screens use a secondary LCD panel to offer local dimming on a per-pixel level. Basically, Panasonic is using two LCD screens to block light from reaching the screens users, enabling deeper blacks and OLED-rivalling screen performance.

The screen that Panasonic showcased at IFA 2019 was a prototype, which should help explain why their screen was several inches thick. Moving forward, this technology could make its way into both consumer and professional-grade TVs and monitors. The only downside of this screen tech is heat output. MegaCon screens use an extremely bright backlight to enable HDR-levels of peak brightness while using a secondary LCD panel as a dimmer. Unlike other HDR technologies, these screens become dimmer by blocking light, not by producing less light.

According to Panasonic, their MegaCon prototype offers 99% coverage of the DCI-P3 colour space and a maximum contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1.

This technology is similar to Hisense’s ULED XD technology, which uses a similar dual-LCD technique to offer local dimming. Hisense’s technology was showcased at CES 2019 and used a 1080p dimming screen behind a 4K LCD screen to offer a local dimming zone for every four pixels that the company’s ULED XD screens.

At this time it is unknown if Pansonic plans to release MegaCon screens in the form of consumer-grade products anytime soon.
