RTX 5080 user discovers melted PSU cable – this time on the PSU side

Another day, another melted 16-pin power cable – This time an RTX 5080 was affected

A Reddit user called “Ambitious_Ladder1320” (via WCCFTECH) has reported that their system’s 16-pin power cable melted when used with their RTX 5080 GPU and their ROG Loki power supply.

This user had an ROG Astral RTX 5080 GPU in their system. This GPU features monitoring features that allow users to detect poor power cable connections. The user claims that their GPU “flashed a red light” to indicate a poor power connection. This was despite the fact that their PSU cables were fully seated on both the PSU and GPU sides. The user then experiences strange issues after restarting their system.

After a complete system shutdown, this user unplugged all of their power cables and discovered that their 16-pin 12VHPWR cable was melted. The cable was melted at the PSU-end of the cable, leaving their GPU undamaged.

This is not the first time that cable melting issues have been reported with ASUS’ ROG Loki power supply. Even so, these two instances don’t necessarily mean that ASUS’ SFX PSU design is at fault. After all, der8auer has uncovered cable overheating issues when using other PSU designs.
