Samsung reveals “The Wall”, a 146-inch modular MicroLED TV

We have discussed MicroLEDs before at OC3D, a technology that has the potential to revolutionise the display industry, in theory offering visual improvements over both Quantum LED (QLED) and OLED offerings, while also eliminating the disadvantages of each standard like the latency and colour burn-in.

Samsung has showcased their first ever modular MicroLED TV at CES 2018, offering an insane screen size of 146-inches with the promise that their technology is modular enough to create screens with any size or resolution, eliminating the issues that typically associated with producing large screens.

Aside from their modularity, MicroLEDs can offer incredible brightness levels, an extremely wide colour gamut and extreme levels of contrast, with the technology being self-emitting, lacking the need for backlighting or colour filtering. Alongside this, the technology is also said to offer higher levels of power efficiency and long light source lifetime, with Samsung stating that their MicroLED tech is “setting the standard for future screen technology”.

Samsung did not reveal the exact resolution or other known specifications of the television like peak brightness, though CES attendees have reported a positive experience when viewing the colossal display.

This display is not expected to release to consumers in its current form, which means that we will likely have to wait until CES 2019 or 2020 before we see consumer ready MicroLED-based products.
