At the Supercomputing 2017 conference, Nvidia announced a major upgrade to their SaturnV AI supercomputer, an upgrade that could make the SaturnV one of the world’s top 10 supercomputers in terms of performance and perhaps the world’s most energy efficient.

Nvidia will be upgrading the supercomputer with 660 DXG-1 nodes, each of which house eight Tesla GV100 (Volta-powered) GPUs to offer a total of 5,280 total GV100 GPUs within the system. In terms of half-precision (FP16) compute performance these GPUs will offer around an ExaFLOP (1,000 petaFLOPs) of compute performance.

Nvidia’s SaturnV is already the world’s 4th greenest (energy efficient) supercomputer, with this upgrade moving the system from Pascal to Volta while also delivering some key upgrades in the form of Tensor cores. This will make the SaturnV one of the most powerful AI supercomputers out there, thanks to Volta’s AI-specific features.

The SaturnV will not be the only Volta-powered supercomputer, with the Nvidia/IBM Summit already featuring Volta and Japan’s ABCI supercomputer already featuring 4,352 GV100 GPUs.

These new supercomputers are not just about bragging rights, with computing time on this hardware selling for a high price to research teams across the world.
