500Mbps broadband is now available in the UK through Virgin Media

Virgin Media currently stands as the UK’s fastest broadband provider, offering consumers download speeds as high as 350Mbps, already outpacing their competitors on the Open Reach broadband network.

Now, Virgin Media plans to raise the bar once again, this time to 500Mbps, offering average download speeds of 516Mbps and upload speeds of 35Mbps. Sadly, this service is only available as part of the company’s V.VIP bundle, forcing consumers to bundle their ultra-fast broadband with TV, Phone and SIM card packages. This package costs £99 per month for 12 months, and then £139 thereafter.

It is likely that Virgin will offer their customers a standalone VIVID 500 fibre package at a later date, which is good news for those who have no need for home phones or two of Virgin’s Tivo boxes.

As content streaming and digital downloads become more popular, high-speed broadband will eventually become a necessity for a large proportion of UK households, especially as screen and content resolutions continue to increase.
