Akira is getting a 4K Remaster and a new Anime series

Akira is easily one of the most groundbreaking Anime movies out there, acting as one of the driving forces that enabled the Japanise artform to gain international recognition after its release in 1988.

Now, Akira is set to be remastered, offering fans of this cult classic a 4K rendition of the movie, complete with HDR support and 192Khz audio using Dolby TrueHD. This new version of the will release in Japan on April 24th, 2020, with the conversion coming from the film’s 35mm master.

That’s not all, Akira is also set to be turned into a new ANime series, adapting the legendary Akira manga to explore the series in a way that it has never been shown before in motion pictures.

Akira’s Manga and Filmic versions were developed concurrently, with the manga starting before the film’s creation while ending after the film hit cinemas. As such, the Manga both inspired the film, while also taking inspiration from it in its latter chapters. The manga also includes a wealth of additional characters and content to be explored in anime form, as many lesser or background characters in the movie take a more significant role in the full manga version of the series.

Sunrise will create the new Akira anime series, but aside from that very little is known about the series.
