ASUS reveals their ROG Phone II Smartphone
For starters, ASUS has upgraded to Qualcomm’s SNapdragon 855 SOC, offering a Prime core clock speed of 2.96GHz and a boosted GPU clock speed of 675MHz, which when combined with the SOC’s use of Cortex A76 cores and Adreno 640 graphics makes for a killer combination.Â
The highly binned 855 SOC offers users a Prime core clock speed of 2.96GHz, rather than 2.84GHz on the standard Snapdragon 855 and a boosted GPU clock speed of 675MHz, rather than the 855’s 5.85MHz clock speed. Better still, ASUS plans to prevent throttling on this new CPU by utilising an improved cooler design.Â
Below are the full specifications of the ASUS ROG Phone II, which come to us courtesy of Anandtech. Â
With the ROG Phone II, ASUS has upgraded the original model’s 6-inch 2160×1080 screen with a larger 6.5-inch 2340×1080 screen, offering a higher refresh rate of 102Hz, vs 90Hz and a 240Hz Touch controller, which enables a lower touch latency of 49ms, which ASUS claims is up to 44% faster than their competition.Â
ASUS also plans to offer its users a longer battery life, with the ROG Phone II’s larger screen size and thicker enclosure enabling the device to offer a 6,000mAh battery. This battery is 50% larger than what was used on the original ROG Phone.Â
Thanks to ASUS’ updated thermal solution, ASUS aims to offer “never throttling performance” which means that their included Snapdragon 855 SOC will always run at its peak performance levels under load, which is great news for mobile gamers. ASUS’ larger 12GB of LPDDR4 memory should also enable their device to keep more application data in memory before running into issues.Â
The maximum storage potential of the ROG Phone II will be 512GB, with ASUS utilising UFS 3.0 storage. At this time it is unknown if lower capacity models will be offered.Â
With their latest generation smartphone, ASUS plans to offer more accessories than they did for the original ROG phone, but sadly cross-compatibility with last-generation ROG phone accessories may not be possible, thanks to changes in the size of ASUS’ ROG Phone II. Â
Camera-wise ASUS’ ROG phone appears to offer the same camera setup as the Zenfone 6, which uses a Sony IMX586 48MP camera sensor alongside a 13MP wide-angle camera.Â
ASUS’ ROG Phone II will release in China on July 23rd and launch globally in early September. UK, US and EU pricing for the ROG Phone II are unknown at the time of writing.Â
